Rocky Mountain News prints final edition

Much like the rumored shutdown of the San Francisco Chronicle, Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado, experienced the same in December. After 149 years and 311 days, the Rocky Mountain News published its final edition on February 27th, 2009. If you can, watch through the entire video. It’s heartbreaking.

Feeling like a throwback today. I took this in 2005. That was a long time ago. A time I barely remember.

Self Edge x Dry Bones x Superfuture jeans

Superfuture has finally created a jean to reflect the infinite wisdom and resource of their popular subforum dedicated to all things Japanese denim. In collaboration with Self Edge and Dry Bones, this Superfuture’s first official jean. It comes out just in time for the third annual Self Edge x Superfuture party on March 7th.

“With the SEXDBXS09 jean we’ve allowed the users of Superfuture and Superdenim to give their input on styling, cut, and accents for a very special jean to be released on February 28th; even the leather patch was designed by a renown artist from Texas named JimmyC from Superfuture.

The SEXDBXS09 jean has been produced by Dry Bones, one of Japan’s longest running vintage Americana style denim manufacturers. Months were spent getting the denim exactly where we wanted it and the denim was woven for this project; as the denim has never before been used on another garment nobody knows exactly how it will age. Self Edge has chosen a denim with a little more weight than the classic styles, at 16oz it’s got heft to it, and with massive amounts of character showing from the warp and weft it’s sure to age well. The fit is that of a straight leg jean, slightly slimmed down, with a button fly and a long inseam which can be hemmed to the wearer’s length without altering the silhouette.

We’re proud the way the denim has turned out, it’s something we’ve never had in the store before. The denim has been calendered and singed, yet hasn’t lost any character which is instantly recognizable even at a quick glance. Rounded out with hidden rivets, cowhide leather tag, Superfuture dual-tone “Rep Bar” stitch, military grade green rear pocket linings, coin pocket selvedge, and a cotton poly-core stitch; this jean is exactly what we want to be seen in.”

You can also read the exclusive breaking news from Cool Hunting, where they interview Self Edge owner, Kiya Babzani, and the artist for the jean’s leather patch design, Jimmy Crow.

The jean will be released on February 28th, 2009. Retail price for the SUFUxDBxS is $275.

Bad vernacular

A list of things it is not ok to ever say. I agree completely with ‘za (which my friend back in New York would always say), vaycay, and convo. When I talk to some people it feels like an e-conversation…outloud.

Orthorexia

Parents who are overzealous of eating healthy and micromanaging calories and trans fats risk eating disorders or obsessive compulsive disorders. Kids, now than ever before, are aware and afraid of various overprocessed snacks and no-no’s at school.

Lisa Dorfman, a registered dietitian and the director of sports nutrition and performance at the University of Miami, says that she often sees children who are terrified of foods that are deemed “bad” by parents. “It’s almost a fear of dying, a fear of illness, like a delusional view of foods in general,” she said. “I see kids whose parents have hypnotized them. I have 5-year-olds that speak like 40-year-olds. They can’t eat an Oreo cookie without being concerned about trans fats.”

What is more frightening is the fact that we are passing along our self-obsessions, masked as holistic health, to our children.

When the girl told her mother what Ms. Setnick said, the mother was furious, according to Ms. Setnick. “She said, ‘Don’t you know white rice is just like sugar?’ ”

Growing up in a family environment that was insulated from the madness of American culture provided me the freedom to eat as much white rice as I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, there are downsides, but I am certainly glad I didn’t have my parents looming over my shoulder micromanaging every calorie I consumed. (It’s probably because I’m Chinese.)

It’s been talked about for some time. Even before the rumors started, I had secondhand confirmation from some other folks. More lines. More queues.

San Francisco Chronicle faces closure

This is heartbreaking news. The newspaper I grew up reading, SF Chronicle, is facing closure in the wake up continued annual deficits.

Hearst said that the Chronicle lost more than $50 million last year and that this year’s losses to date are worse. The Chronicle has had major losses each year since 2001.

Beyond my own personal attachment to reading the Chronicle, they’ve been around for quite some time. In fact, the closure of such a well-known paper could be a slow actualization of print media losing it’s ground to declining readership and increased Internet resources. Yahoo! News has more in-depth statistics of the Chronicle’s performance and it’s ranking through nationwide circulation.

The paper employs 275 news staff and is the 12th-largest in the United States, according to the U.S. Audit Bureau of Circulations, with average weekday circulation of 339,430. It is the 19th-largest paper by Sunday circulation.

I never realized how big the Chronicle was and had always looked at it like my small local paper. Something else to be proud about as a San Franciscan.
