M.T.A. expected to increase fares

If it wasn’t already expensive enough, the Metropolitan Transit Authority is expected to hike up fares to ridiculous prices.

The base subway and bus fare in New York City would rise to $2.50, up from $2. A 30-day MetroCard would cost $103, up from $81.

Everyone is feeling the pinch, and it adds up for daily commuters.

Proposed increases for disabled riders in New York City on the door-to-door Access-a-Ride service were scaled back, however. The authority had proposed raising those fares to double the base subway fare. Instead, the fares will continue to mirror the base subway fare, which is set to rise to $2.50.

Under the proposal expected to be approved on Wednesday, weekly MetroCards for city subways and buses would rise to $31, from $25.

Express bus fares would rise to $6.25, from $5.

$103 is an absurd amount for a monthly card. This hike probably won’t improve services, either.

Gmail adds undo feature

Gmail has implemented an undo button for e-mails. It actually just holds your outgoing message for five seconds to give you a chance to hit the panic button. It would be magical if they could somehow arrange something like a real undo, though. Works well with gmail goggles.

Quietube bookmarklet

Quietube is the next-level way to browse YouTube videos. The only thing missing is implementing the fmt=18 high quality video codes to work with the boomarklet. Regardless, this and readability have quickly become essentials in my daily routine.

Dangers of losing ethnic media

The Boston Globe has an op-ed piece about dying print and what that means for reporting ethnic media. What I was surprised about were the dismal figures in ethnic reporting throughout mainstream outlets.

More than 42 percent of print newsrooms across the country employ no black, Asian American, Latino, or American Indian journalists at all. According to even the most generous analyses, they consult white sources at least two-thirds of the time.
