Why does this pair of pants cost $550?

NY Times details Band of Outsiderspricing on a pair of chinos:

The final price reflects the markups of the designer and the retailer, what they charge to cover expenses, pay their employees and, with luck, make a profit on what sells to cover the losses on what does not. Mr. Sternberg doubles the cost to arrive at a wholesale price of $220. The retailer adds another markup, typically a factor of 2.5, which brings us to $550.

An obvious “no shit” revelation here. When you’re looking for something that has solid construction and a great fit, you might have to buckle down and drop a bit more coin than you normally would. I know that’s how I feel about some of the jeans and button-up shirts I wear, but this is a very subjective issue that varies due to personal style, taste, and body type.

Then again, retail was up 1.2% in March and steadily on the rise — designers who charge a ton of money for their clothes might not as crazy as they’re made out to be.

Jeremy being Jeremy

One of my good friends, Jeremy, drops a little bit of knowledge about living it up in San Francisco with the lifers:

it seems the hyphy movement has come and gone, but i still occasionally gig out when shit comes on, i wish they played it more.

the whole mission is gonna be poppin’ off on saturday night. the mission is where all the bro’s from the marina go to hit on chicks like, “yo… so you’re like uh… one of those sweet rocker chicks huh?” kiya is probably gonna suggest benders which is a huge bar w/ excellent drinks specials that are moderately priced where all the bad ass biker dudes hang.

i’ll show you fucks an experience though, uptown? you will meet a chick who will let you flick some bean. delirium? get ready to pay almost nothing for drinks and grind with pro-ho’s to new order or biggie. casanova? the too-good for the mission chicks go here and sit on couches, you could get comfortable.

Hilarious and poignant at the same time.

Self-published, etc.

I’ve switched it up (once again) and placed any professional work onto a separate blog at my main site: sidneylo.com.

Oh, as of May 3rd, I will be self-published. If you care to read about it, I will be inundating you with links to the same blurb about my book in the coming weeks.

Stages of a photographer

I skipped the gearfaggotry and HDR hole, but I’m definitely somewhere between “dammit, I suck,” and “one exposure per motive.”

Whitest Boy Alive – 1517

I heard this over a year ago while waiting in line at Green Apple Books; it’s like the kind of music you’d hear in one of those retro-futuristic homes from the 70′s with woodgrain everything.

Perception

Client: We like the design, but could you make the blues all the same.

Me: It’s the same blue through out the design.

Client: It looks like different blues.

Me: That’s because colors are perceived differently dependent on neighboring colors.

Client: That’s stupid.
