The ultimate YouTube

Yooouuutuuube is a YouTube plugin of sorts. It transforms your average YouTube video into a sequential animated sequence of still frames and creates the illusion of multiplicity and other cool effects. Try doing it with 144px by 96px for starters. Some examples here.

Motordrome: The Wall of Death

Thrillarena features a bunch of photographic goodness on motordromes of yesteryear. Cookie Ayers doing no-handed wall rides look so badass.

The NY Times also wrote a piece on Samantha Morgan, one of the few remaining female motordrome riders in the United States.

As she continues her maverick pursuit, Ms. Morgan worries it may be the end of an era for women in the dromes. There were as many as 30 in the dromes’ heyday, she said, but now there are no young people coming up to take her place. She knows only one other female rider, Ms. Donmoyer, who rides for the Hell Riders and is known as Sandra D.

She passed away in April of 2008 due to complications from prior injuries while riding the wall of death.

What’s in the box?

A short film created by Dutch student Tim Smit, using only 3DS Max, After Effects, and 150 euros. Cleverly appended to this amazing video is an ARG. Someone’s followed the trail of crumbs and come up with clues and hints. What’s in the box?

Tenori-on

The Tenori-on is a musical device created by Toshio Iwai that implements a grid of LED switches that create organic music. You can try a version of it yourself with the Tone Matrix. Not as complex, but still fun nonetheless.

Battlestar Galactica at the United Nations

Battlestar Galactica was recently invited to the United Nations for a panel discussion on parallels between the motifs of their science fiction television show and real world issues we face today. It featured a guest of 100 New York high schoolers as well. The Chicago Tribune recounts the discussions that took place at the United Nations.

“We are all entitled to a social and international order in which all of the rights and freedoms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights can be fully realized, regardless of race, sex, language or religion,” Mokhiber. Linking the quest for basic human rights to the “Battlestar” characters’ search for Earth, he said, “I would suggest that this is the mythical Earth for which we are all searching.”

It’s a bit creepy, but also very telling, how this seemingly dream mash-up of BSG and the U.N. makes perfect sense. A convergence of the awesomeness that is Battlestar and real life?

Please watch the two hour panel discussion here (realplayer required). Edward James Olmos even yells out ‘So say we all!’ to the audience. Bizarro.
