Weekend at Self Edge New York

I arrived in New York early Saturday morning to catch the opening party for Self Edge New York. I spent most of the weekend eating, drinking, and bowling with Mr. and Mrs. Self Edge and the 3Sixteen crew. Thank you to 3Sixteen and Self Edge for an amazing time. I’m looking forward to taking a longer visit at the end of August (where I’ll hopefully be eating a lot more food than I was physically capable of consuming this time around). A photo-ladened post after the jump.

Sex and the Sartorialist

The Globe has an awkward and revealing interview with Scott Schuman, the Sartorialist, at a party at Holt Renfrew.

You look fit – just not big like a quarterback.
I’m pretty good at the sex. And pretty good at picture taking. That’s about it. Garance is pretty happy. And the hotel-room neighbours are pretty pissed. You can write that; that’s totally fine with me.

You want people to know you’re good in bed?
Yeah. Yeah.

I haven’t read the Sartorialist in a long time, but it appears that he started an affair and/or left his wife and kids since reaching international recognition.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
Every rapper says if I was not doing this, I would be in jail. And basically, I’m a rapper, only I’m a photographer. So if I wasn’t doing this, I would definitely be in jail.

Kanye West needs to watch the fuck out — Scott is out to dethrone you.

The anonymous model

I don’t read Jezebel much, but they’ve got a great post about the author’s personal experience with being a full-time fashion model.

I often reflected on the fact that studies show that women, after looking at fashion magazines — full of pictures of girls very much like me, sometimes even pictures of me — feel bad about themselves. I also often wondered why it is, given this fact, that we buy the magazines again next month.

I’m glad I never paid any attention to fashion magazines. I’ve skimmed through them in college and have studied the history of advertising in various seminars, and I definitely see why there is an addiction to the visual appeal of rail-thin models in various states of fetishized undress — I also sense many of the guys I know who are into fashion look at these magazines for that sole reason.

It took me a very long time to reconcile the apparent disconnect between the consistent wonderfulness of the many people I was working with, and the persistent awfulness of the position of abject and total disempowerment that I, like any non-super model, occupied — to realize that the problems of the modeling industry are not in fact personal, but structural.

Crocs running out of business

The Washington Post is reporting that the makers of Croc shoes are running out of business.

The company had expanded to meet demand, but financially pressed customers cut back. Last year the company lost $185.1 million, slashed roughly 2,000 jobs and scrambled to find money to pay down millions in debt. Now it’s stuck with a surplus of shoes, and its auditors have wondered if it can stay afloat. It has until the end of September to pay off its debt.

A fashion faux pas will soon be laid to rest.

Sex, Lies and Photoshop

The New York Times does a video feature of the retouching in fashion and magazine industry and its adverse effects on society. Should they be obligated to cite all instances of retouching?

Honestly, everything is so heavily ‘shopped, you need to take everything with a grain of salt.

Self Edge x Dry Bones x Superfuture jeans

Superfuture has finally created a jean to reflect the infinite wisdom and resource of their popular subforum dedicated to all things Japanese denim. In collaboration with Self Edge and Dry Bones, this Superfuture’s first official jean. It comes out just in time for the third annual Self Edge x Superfuture party on March 7th.

“With the SEXDBXS09 jean we’ve allowed the users of Superfuture and Superdenim to give their input on styling, cut, and accents for a very special jean to be released on February 28th; even the leather patch was designed by a renown artist from Texas named JimmyC from Superfuture.

The SEXDBXS09 jean has been produced by Dry Bones, one of Japan’s longest running vintage Americana style denim manufacturers. Months were spent getting the denim exactly where we wanted it and the denim was woven for this project; as the denim has never before been used on another garment nobody knows exactly how it will age. Self Edge has chosen a denim with a little more weight than the classic styles, at 16oz it’s got heft to it, and with massive amounts of character showing from the warp and weft it’s sure to age well. The fit is that of a straight leg jean, slightly slimmed down, with a button fly and a long inseam which can be hemmed to the wearer’s length without altering the silhouette.

We’re proud the way the denim has turned out, it’s something we’ve never had in the store before. The denim has been calendered and singed, yet hasn’t lost any character which is instantly recognizable even at a quick glance. Rounded out with hidden rivets, cowhide leather tag, Superfuture dual-tone “Rep Bar” stitch, military grade green rear pocket linings, coin pocket selvedge, and a cotton poly-core stitch; this jean is exactly what we want to be seen in.”

You can also read the exclusive breaking news from Cool Hunting, where they interview Self Edge owner, Kiya Babzani, and the artist for the jean’s leather patch design, Jimmy Crow.

The jean will be released on February 28th, 2009. Retail price for the SUFUxDBxS is $275.

Supreme San Francisco

It’s been talked about for some time. Even before the rumors started, I had secondhand confirmation from some other folks. More lines. More queues.

Kanye West dresses better than gay people

After the interview with The Guardian about fashion and homosexuality with Kanye West, New York magazine got a brief moment to clarify things with Mr. West.

What kind of reaction have you gotten for saying that you dress better than a lot of gay people?
“What did I say?”

You said that now that you know more gay people, you realize a lot of them don’t dress well.
“But there’s a lot of gay people that dress better than me, too. No, I just think it’s a stereotype that all gay people dress good, and then it’s also a stereotype that if you dress good, you’re gay.”

This is some second-coming-of-Jesus type realization. Congrats.
