“Fuck selvedge — that’s hand-dyed indigo from a left-handed weave.”

HBO’s How To Make It In America is the new Entourage repackaged with pseudo-LES scenesters; a lingering scent of yesteryear’s BAPE clothing cameos, skater kids, and limited edition sneakers; and the discovery of — yes, you guessed it — Japanese selvedge denim. The pilot is mildly entertaining save for the formulaic gang of characters. (Of course, the main protagonist is the wimpy white guy who misses his ex.)

It’s the title, however, that bothers me. It almost seems cruel to send the streetwear crowd of millennial kids foaming at the mouth with this new television series. And if we were ever speculating about when Japanese selvedge denim got up and jumped the shark, this might be it. I’m going to spoil this show for you: This is the new shit. It’s from a mythical place called “Japan.” They used to make rare sneakers, but now suddenly it’s this blue stuff that’s really special. $3000 for a roll. Let’s hustle and be the new denim empire of the Lower East Side. Damien Hirst! Or something like that.

Weekend at Self Edge New York

I arrived in New York early Saturday morning to catch the opening party for Self Edge New York. I spent most of the weekend eating, drinking, and bowling with Mr. and Mrs. Self Edge and the 3Sixteen crew. Thank you to 3Sixteen and Self Edge for an amazing time. I’m looking forward to taking a longer visit at the end of August (where I’ll hopefully be eating a lot more food than I was physically capable of consuming this time around). A photo-ladened post after the jump.

Self Edge x Dry Bones x Superfuture jeans

Superfuture has finally created a jean to reflect the infinite wisdom and resource of their popular subforum dedicated to all things Japanese denim. In collaboration with Self Edge and Dry Bones, this Superfuture’s first official jean. It comes out just in time for the third annual Self Edge x Superfuture party on March 7th.

“With the SEXDBXS09 jean we’ve allowed the users of Superfuture and Superdenim to give their input on styling, cut, and accents for a very special jean to be released on February 28th; even the leather patch was designed by a renown artist from Texas named JimmyC from Superfuture.

The SEXDBXS09 jean has been produced by Dry Bones, one of Japan’s longest running vintage Americana style denim manufacturers. Months were spent getting the denim exactly where we wanted it and the denim was woven for this project; as the denim has never before been used on another garment nobody knows exactly how it will age. Self Edge has chosen a denim with a little more weight than the classic styles, at 16oz it’s got heft to it, and with massive amounts of character showing from the warp and weft it’s sure to age well. The fit is that of a straight leg jean, slightly slimmed down, with a button fly and a long inseam which can be hemmed to the wearer’s length without altering the silhouette.

We’re proud the way the denim has turned out, it’s something we’ve never had in the store before. The denim has been calendered and singed, yet hasn’t lost any character which is instantly recognizable even at a quick glance. Rounded out with hidden rivets, cowhide leather tag, Superfuture dual-tone “Rep Bar” stitch, military grade green rear pocket linings, coin pocket selvedge, and a cotton poly-core stitch; this jean is exactly what we want to be seen in.”

You can also read the exclusive breaking news from Cool Hunting, where they interview Self Edge owner, Kiya Babzani, and the artist for the jean’s leather patch design, Jimmy Crow.

The jean will be released on February 28th, 2009. Retail price for the SUFUxDBxS is $275.
