I was a Mad Man

William Drenttel of Design Observer writes about his time spent as a mad man in the 70′s.

I was used to watching creative directors choose type by pointing in big books and saying, “Let’s make it look something like this.” There were, hard as it is to imagine, no computers in the studio — the bullpen, as it was called.

In many ways, it’s just as simple today as it was back then to pick out a typeface — instead of a book it’s neatly laid out typefaces in Adobe.
